On Wednesday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine expressed his appreciation for the European Union's recent implementation of its 17th sanctions package aimed at Russia. He emphasized the necessity for even more stringent actions to compel Moscow to halt its military aggression. During a discussion with Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine's ambitions for EU membership and the importance of a strong global reaction to Russia's conduct.
Zelenskyy stated, "I had a productive dialogue with President Costa. I updated him on our diplomatic initiatives and we explored potential future actions." He conveyed his gratitude for the EU's latest sanctions, noting that preparations for the next round are already in progress and that they must be significantly more impactful.
He pointed out that the sanctions should focus on Russia's energy and banking industries, as well as its shadow fleet, which includes both the vessels and their crews. "The sanctions must encompass the energy sector, banking sector, and the shadow fleet — not just the ships but also the personnel operating them. Antonio confirmed that if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire, these sanctions will be enforced," Zelenskyy remarked.
Additionally, he mentioned discussions regarding the initiation of negotiation clusters for Ukraine's EU membership, stressing the need for a resolution to advance the process. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing efforts towards this objective.
Recent Sanctions by the UK and EU
Earlier, Zelenskyy thanked UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the UK's new sanctions against Russia, believing they would contribute to pressuring Moscow towards achieving peace. During a conversation with the UK Prime Minister, he underscored the necessity for a unified international response and urged the United States to adopt stronger measures against Russia to bolster ongoing diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and sustainable peace in Ukraine.
The UK and the European Union have introduced new sanctions targeting Russia's economy, shadow oil fleet, and military supply chains. The EU's 17th sanctions package is its most comprehensive to date, while the UK has enacted 100 new sanctions, affecting financial institutions and military suppliers.
The European Council's latest package includes economic and individual restrictive measures designed to restrict Russia's access to critical military technology. According to a press release from the European Council, "Today's 17th package is part of a broader set of EU measures targeting Russia's hybrid activities, domestic human rights violations, and the use of riot control agents by Russian forces in Ukraine under three additional sanctions regimes."
Moreover, the EU has imposed individual sanctions, including asset freezes and funding prohibitions, targeting the shadow fleet ecosystem. These measures affect shipping companies involved in the maritime transportation of crude oil and oil products from Russia, including entities from the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Hong Kong.
